Adventures in Reading & Writing 3-5
The Adventures in Reading and Writing class is growing! The elementary class builds on what was learned in the primary class and adapts it for older elementary-age children. This class will take the lessons taught in the younger class and grow with your child. And if your child did not take the primary class, that’s no problem! The class is great for hesitant and confident readers and writers. Children will be encouraged to think creatively and take chances as they hear good literature and create stories of their own.
Each 1.5-hour class will consist of a rich literature reading and discussion (using both short stories and chapter books). We will discuss the basic fundamentals of literature such as genre, characters, and figurative language, and take it to the next step to understand the author’s purpose, plot, and other language elements. Next, we will practice a variety of activities to study the story further. This may include acting out the story, craft activities, games, or using graphic organizers to further explore a theme or idea. Finally, children will continue the literature experience by writing independently and learning the writing process. Confident and hesitant writers will be encouraged to use their words to respond to their learning and create stories of their own. This class is a no-pressure experience to explore literature and writing to encourage your child’s creativity and love for learning. Children will be challenged at their level and encouraged to identify their own voice and grow in their own creativity.
In this class, we will focus on and celebrate individual thought without the pressure of emphasizing spelling and grammar. Students will build on their own imaginations to find their voice and express themselves through their words. Individual abilities and ideas will be celebrated, and curious minds are encouraged!
Class homework requirements: Some at-home writing will be needed to complete writing activities.
