When most people think of art, they think of painting and drawing. But let’s face it; we are not all gifted at drawing and painting. In fact, many of us decide we aren’t artistic when what we draw doesn’t look like what we intended. When the cute little kitten in our minds looks like something the cat chewed on instead…well, we tend to think we are bad artists. And if the definition of art is just drawing or painting realistic depictions, we might be right.

I myself cannot draw, although it amuses my students when I try! It amuses ME when I try! LOL! In fact, me teaching “art” cracks me up! But I do have fun creating. If we redefine “art” as “an activity that is done to create something,” then we open up a LOT of opportunities to create art that doesn’t require pencils, paper, or paint. Things like decoupage, mosaics, collages, and origami are all cool forms of art. There are SO many ways to be crafty and create beautiful, fun projects your kids can be proud of.

In addition to those mentioned above, a few projects that we will be trying out this year are:

Clay bowls

Nature art

Cutting crafts

Hydro painting

Carving

Recycled art

T-shirts

These are projects we can all learn together and all feel successful while creating something.

There will be no outside homework unless a student wants to finish a project at home. All supplies will be provided though I may ask for donations of certain items, i.e., magazines for collage. No grades will be given for this class as art is subjective and the point is to try new ways to be creative. The only requirement will be for students to participate and give their best effort with their best attitude.
