Nomads to the Moon American History
“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
We study history to understand how the past shapes the present and how to carry those lessons into the future. To fully understand and learn history it’s more important to make connections to the events of the past, to not just know what happened but also why it happened and how it affected the people and world and also how it impacts us, even now. My goal in teaching history is to challenge students to place themselves in the time period and imagine how it would have been.
America has a fascinating history that began LONG before Europeans “discovered” North America. Beginning with the people who walked across the Bering Strait to September 11, 2001 students will explore the truths and distortions in our history. Through a variety of learning methods and exposures students will be encouraged to engage with history by examining the impact of historical events on themselves and their world. Light homework (less than an hour per week), occasional projects, provocative thinking assignments, and tests for reinforcement will help involve the students in active learning.
As students’ abilities vary please know that family or technology assistance with both reading and writing is encouraged. Writing in class will sometimes be required but I will accommodate those who need it. Occasionally students will be presenting their projects or research but I am happy to assist. Willingness to participate in class discussions is required.
