Harry Potter & the Gospel
Literature/Theology
Embark on a magical journey that intertwines the enchanting world of Harry Potter with profound theological exploration in this unique 30-week high school English and Theology class. ‘Harry Potter and the Gospel” invites students to delve into the rich narratives crafted by J.K. Rowling while simultaneously exploring the timeless themes of morality, ethics, and spirituality found in the Bible.
This interdisciplinary course for students in grades 9-12 will foster critical thinking skills and reflective analysis by drawing parallels between the Harry Potter series and fundamental Christian principles. Through a combination of close literary analysis, theological discussions, and reflective writing exercises, students will uncover connections between the fantastical elements of the wizarding world and the lessons embedded in gospel teachings.
We will explore themes such as sacrifice, redemption, friendship, the battle between good and evil, and the transformative power of love. Students will engage in thought-provoking conversations that encourage them to draw connections between the characters’ moral dilemmas in the wizarding realm and the ethical challenges faced by individuals in the real world.
In addition to textual analysis, the course will incorporate theological perspectives, inviting students to explore the representation of spiritual values in the Harry Potter series. By the end of the class, students will not only have a deeper appreciation for the literary and theological aspects of the novels but will also gain insights into how storytelling can convey universal truths.
Harry Potter and the Gospel is a captivating course designed for students who are passionate about literature, theology, and the intersections between fiction and faith. Join us on a magical quest where the magic of Hogwarts meets the wisdom of gospel teachings.
