Chemistry

Friendly Chemistry is a hands on, fun and non -intimidating way to learn Chemistry. Most class sessions in the first semester have a game, experiment or hands on method to teach the challenging concepts of chemistry. The second semester tackles stoichiometry. The chemistry concepts presented in Friendly Chemistry are NOT watered-down. The concepts are just explained in ways that are readily understood by most learners. Coupled with these explanations is a host of teaching aids, labs and games which makes the learning concrete and multi-sensory. Friendly Chemistry is a complete high school-level chemistry course which uses simple language and a multitude of analogies to make learning easy! Friendly Chemistry utilizes games, activities and lab experiences to make the concepts crystal clear and readily retained! Parents often comment, “I wish I had had this when I was taking chemistry. Now it all makes so much sense!”

These are the same topics taught in a traditional high school chemistry course but using language and analogies that make it easier to understand. This class can meet the needs of those looking for Chemistry to fulfill their science requirements to graduate high school and also the student who is interested in a science-based career. It is the perfect curriculum for a homeschool tutorial setting!

Topics Covered include:

  • Atomic Theory

  • Trends of the Periodic Table of Elements

  • Quantum Mechanics (Electron Arrangement)

  • Ion Formation

  • Compound Formation – Bonding

  • Avogadro’s Number and the Mole

  • Calculation of Formula Weights and Percent Composition

  • Empirical Formulas

  • Writing and Classifying Chemical Reactions

  • Balancing Chemical Equations

  • Stoichiometry (predicting quantitative outcomes of reactions and predicting necessary amounts of reactants to produce a desired amount of product)

  • Solutions and Molarity

  • Gas Laws

Students will need the Friendly Chemistry Student Edition, the Manipulatives book and the student workbook.

The tutor grades all assignments and tests; however, you may purchase the Annotated Solutions book if you would like to check homework at home or make corrections.

Class Homework requirements: This class has weekly homework including worksheets, tests, quizzes, and lab reports (lab reports are not weekly however). Schoology is used to submit quizzes each week and to review Quizlet. Students need access to Schoology at home. Students typically need 30-45 minutes 4 or 5 times a week to commit to chemistry. The second semester homework will likely take more time.

Please note: This is a 32-week class
