American Sign Language II
This 30-week, 1 1/2 hour class is for high school students as a continuation of basic American Sign Language. Students will continue to study the five parameters of signing: hand shape, palm orientation, movement, location, and expressive/non-manual markers. Students will build basic conversational vocabulary, ASL sentence structure, and syntax. Students will add classifiers to their ASL vocabulary as well as basic storytelling. This course also covers the
History of the Deaf Culture and students will study current and historical Deaf people in the Deaf American Culture. The course goals are for students to demonstrate basic ASL skills and be able to build more complex communication using everyday conversational signs.
The curriculum is online and created by Deaf professor Bill G. Vicars. In Tennessee, ASL can count as a foreign language credit, but students should confirm this with their schools or colleges.
Class Homework requirements: 15-30 minute daily fingerspelling and sign review at-home activities to reinforce classroom learning, and quizzes. Students will be required to write or type two reports on Deaf Americans as assigned.
Students must have access to the internet as some activities are online.
