5 in a Row

This popular class is a literature-based unit study curriculum for young learners. Using well-loved and outstanding children’s books, this 30-week class is an “all in one” curriculum for young children.  Each book explores 4 subject areas varying from week to week. These areas include social studies, language arts, math, science, art, music, and geography. We use food, sensory items, various media, and supplemental books to enrich the class for young learners.  The class will cover many of the basic social and motor skills found in a traditional elementary school setting:  working cooperatively, participating in clean-up activities, learning to ask for help, handwriting, pencil, and scissor practice, and fostering independence.  We will celebrate holidays and birthdays and special occasions as a class as well. No reading or writing is required, and students will be assisted by the tutor and a class assistant. The emphasis in class will be discovery, learning, socializing, and all the fun and fluffy bits of elementary school we all remember with a good balance of structured and open-ended time. This is a gentle introduction to many subject areas with an emphasis on loving to learn!

Since this class covers two typical class periods, there will be ample time to enjoy the planned activities and allow each child to work at their own pace. Class is not designed for mastery, but to encourage a love of learning! We will have built-in time for snacks and physical activity indoors or out as weather permits. There will be no assigned homework for the class.

*****Food is a large component of this class. If your child has food allergies, I am happy to work with you to provide a list of foods used in class so you can make accommodations.

Why do we call it 5 in a Row?  Find out more here:  https://fiveinarow.com/

This class operates on 3 Cycles (A, B, C). This year will be Cycle A.

Class Homework Requirements:  Minimal, if any.  Outside reading or discussion is always helpful with young children, particularly about what they have done in class.  Parents are encouraged to read the weekly book at home on non-class days so students can hear the story 5 times. We will compile a portfolio of work to send home at the end of the year.
