From Creation to the Cold War

“Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.” George Santayana

We study history to learn how we became who we are as a people and both the mistakes and triumphs of the past so we can continue to improve our world. To fully understand and learn history it’s more important to make connections to the events of the past, to not just know what happened but also why it happened and how it effected the people and world and also how it impacts us even now. My goal in teaching history is to challenge students to place themselves in the time period and imagine how it would would have been.

In this class students will learn about ancient and modern civilizations and their trials and triumphs. Through a variety of learning methods and exposures students will be encouraged to engage with history by examining the impact of historical events on themselves and their world. Light homework (less than an hour per week), occasional projects, provocative thinking assignments, and tests for reinforcement will help involve the students in active learning.

As students’ abilities vary please know that family or technology assistance with both reading and writing is encouraged. Writing in class will sometimes be required but I will accommodate those need it. Occasionally students will be presenting their projects or research but I am happy to assist. Willingness to participate in class discussions is required.

All materials including textbooks will be provided.
