Elementary Language Arts

This 30-week, one-and-a-half-hour class will cover grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing for Grades 4-6.

Grammar will be taught using the 5th Grade Easy Grammar curriculum. Grammar concepts are taught in individual units, beginning with prepositions. Using this approach, sentences are stripped to basics, enabling students to more explicitly understand subject and verb and to build upon that as the units progress. We will then use these basic sentence structures as a foundation for stronger writing skills.

Vocabulary is fun again with educator-created curriculum, The Daily Doodle. Students will have five vocabulary words each week to define (and doodle, of course!). We will then use the vocabulary words in our sentence building and writing activities.

Students will build their writing skills throughout the year with writing prompts and sentence and paragraph building exercises, as well as writing assignments for the books we read in class.

Reading will include 3-4 of the following chapter books throughout the school year, as well as other engaging, illustrated short books and poetry as transitions and around holidays. We will choose most of the books we read by voting in class.

  • The BFG by Roald Dahl

  • Frindle by Andrew Clements

  • The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

  • The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden

  • The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White

  • The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright

Reading assignments will be given weekly and then discussed in class. Books can be checked out at the library, listened to, or purchased (parent’s choice).

This class does not explicitly cover spelling or penmanship.

Prerequisites: Students should be able to read and write simple text. Students will be most successful in this class if they have had exposure to some previous grammar and writing instruction.

Required materials:

  • Easy Grammar Student Workbook for GRADE 5

  • Books from the list above – I will give 2 weeks notice so you may check out or purchase the next book.

  • 3 ring binder with pockets and paper

  • Access to Schoology – this is where assignments and grades will be posted.

Homework requirements: Homework will include written grammar and vocabulary assignments, writing exercises, and reading assignments for the chapter books (average 3 chapters each week).
