Books Alive: B

Great books have always been the doorway to learning! This doorway leads to growth and an appreciation for the wonders around us. Come along on a 30-week learning adventure using picture books to open the door to art, history, vocabulary, geography, science, human relationships, holidays, and so much more. Each class period will begin with the reading of a book. These books are usually Caldecott or Newberry winners; some are classics and some are modern. The books will also cover a wide range of artistic expression: beautiful portraiture, hilarious pictures, warm homey drawings, action-packed illustrations. Students will enjoy listening to great literature each week. Each class period will consist of games, activities, projects, and STEM activities that go along with the book. Holidays will be celebrated in this class as well and are some of the favorite weeks during the year. For example, we always have a Thanksgiving feast, Christmas festivities, Valentine’s Day party and other celebrations.

This class is on a two year rotation schedule. New books will be read and enjoyed each year. At the end of the year, students will have the opportunity to bring in their favorite book and share it with the class. Students are not expected to know how to read for this class. The goal of this class is for children to fall in love with great books and to embrace the joy of learning!

Students are not expected to sit still for the duration of the class. Many opportunities for play, movement, and socialization are given during the class period. They are expected to sit still for the reading of the story. This allows the students to work on their listening skills in order to be able to work on comprehension, vocabulary, and other important reading skills that will help them to eventually become good readers.
