Adventures in Reading

Do you want to find the fun in fiction? Are you ready to dig deeper in the elements of a story? Reading high-quality literature has many proven benefits, including building vocabulary, growing imagination, and improving writing skills. This 4 th -6 th grade literature class takes my Adventures in Reading and Writing class and focuses on the reading side of language arts.

Each 1.5 hour class will consist of a rich literature reading and discussion (using both short stories and chapter books). We will discuss basic fundamentals of literature such as genre, characterization, and figurative language and take it to the next step to understand author’s purpose, plot, and other language elements.  Students will learn practical skills that help understand and retain what they are reading. We will analyze the literature through answering questions, class discussion, graphic organizers, and more. Class time will include reading and discussion, as well as time to take the stories and have fun with them in a variety of ways. Think of it as the “lab” element of the class.

Some reading will be done in class, but some will be completed at home. Reading can be done independently, read aloud, or even using audio books. Some of the books in the course will be the same as my Adventures in Reading and Writing Class. This class will cover more books since some reading will be completed at home. A class workbook will be provided, along with a list of books we will read. Before class begins, I will send out a book list for the year that can be purchased or checked out from the library. Before class begins, I will send out an optional book pack for purchase.

The book lists will rotate each year. A sampling of books we will read could include: Frindle, Freckle Juice, The Lemonade War, Because of Winn-Dixie, By the Great Horn Spoon, Children of the Long House, Biographies from the “Who Was…” series

Class homework requirements: Some at-home reading and workbook completion will be required. Class discussions and activities will be largely based off reading done at home.
