American History With The AMERICAN GIRLS
In this 30 week, 1-1/2 hour class we will explore American history from the time Native Americans were the inhabitants of America to modern times using the American Girl books as our “textbook.” Time periods covered will include Native Americans, the Colonial Era, the Civil War, Pioneers, Immigration, The Great Depression, World Wars I and II and more. In addition to history, we will discuss literature, learn the 50 states and capitals make period crafts, play games and sample food from America’s past, Highlights of the year include a Victorian Tea, complete with manners, and a field trip to Chucallissa Native American Village. We will have additional field trips and movie nights outside of class. Students are given opportunities to develop their creative writing and presentation skills throughout the year and are given the opportunity to learn note taking skills through fill-in-the-blank history sheets for each week’s lesson. Students will earn tickets for class participation, completed reading assignments, bringing materials to class, etc. that they can spend in the General Store which happens 4 times during the year. Students will need access to the “Meet” American Girl books or other historical books related to the time period. You can purchase these or they are available through the library. I also have several copies that are available to borrow.
