“Empowering kids to overcome dyslexia and other reading challenges”
Emily Wakabi has taught students preschool to 5th grade in Memphis schools over the past 9 years. She became a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) and has gone on to help many students grow from non readers to reading on and above grade level. Furthermore, Emily is a practicum supervisor for IMSE. She has seen the methods not only help her own children become proficient readers, but also hundreds of other children through her teaching and tutoring career. Emily finds a lot of joy in seeing a child’s confidence grow as one becomes a fluent reader. It warms her heart when a parent finally mentions that their child picked up a book for the first time on their own and chose to read for fun. When a child becomes a reader it opens a whole new world of learning and opportunity, and for that reason she continues to passionately teach students no matter their starting point in the journey of becoming a reader.
When she is not teaching, Emily enjoys spending time with her husband and four children. They love to hike in Shelby Forest, walk around Shelby Farms, visit the zoo, and go for bike rides. She also enjoys learning about new cultures and trying new foods from around the world.
