Let’s get your child excited about reading by introducing them to fundamental literacy skills using sight, sound, touch, and movement! Early intervention is the best hope for preventing and/or alleviating reading difficulties. Using the Orton-Gillingham method, this 30 week, 1 ½ hour class, will engage your young learner with a variety of activities aimed at building his/her phonemic awareness, fine motor skills, and letter and sound formation and recognition.
The Orton-Gillingham method, originally designed to teach individuals with dyslexia how to read, has been proven to successfully benefit all learners. This method begins with teaching simple sound/symbol relationships using the students’ auditory, visual and kinesthetic pathways. Instruction then progresses logically to more complex concepts, such as blending, word decoding/encoding, and reading comprehension.
In Phonics FUNdamentals, your student will learn to recognize the shapes and sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and practice writing them in a variety of mediums…sand, shaving cream, and finally, crayon and paper. He/she will participate in a variety of alliteration and rhyming games designed to increase phonemic awareness, and your student will build reading comprehension and vocabulary through poems and stories. Also, your child will cover 20 non-phonetic, high frequency words and practice spelling them with silly songs and movement. This cumulative phonics method will give your child the FUNdametals to prepare them to read, and may even have them reading by the end of the year!

Class Homework requirements: No homework is required to participate in class, but obviously, review efforts yield results. Parents wishing to practice with their child should be aware that Orton-Gillingham has a specific method for short, daily review which will be explained upon request. COVID-19 Contingency Plan:
In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom for the 2020-21 school year, I will make the following adjustments to this class.
*Tutor and students will meet during the last 30 minutes of the scheduled class time for a review drill and an introduction to the weekly concept via video conferencing platform.
* Tutor will email activity handouts and reading material for students to print and practice at home with parents as time allows.
Our plan is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin OR cancel CLASSROOM meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation changes. Our goal is to keep your family safe and engaged during this unprecedented time.
