Lego Design Challenge

In the first semester of Lego Design Challenge class, we will use the Simple Machines Set and incorporate the Lego LearnToLearn curriculum across the areas of engineering and technology, language arts, math, science, and social studies. This set contains a brick assortment that includes gears, wheels and axles, levers and pulleys. Instead of memorizing abstract principles and formulas, students will use Lego bricks to construct knowledge in these subject areas as well as building skills of the 21st century.  Each week, a lesson will be presented along with a building challenge that students will complete either alone or with a partner.  Along with a weekly challenge, students will have opportunity to showcase their creativity with free build time in which they will be able to use the available bricks, gears, motors, and other Lego equipment.

In the second semester students will use the Simple and Powered Machines Set.  This set contains a brick assortment for exploring design engineering with more advanced mechanisms, structures, and forces.  A motor is also used to build self-propelled machines adding a totally new dimension of teaching opportunities to the solution.  Students will build models together, each focusing on their part of the model—strengthening their skills in collaboration and communication.

Lego Bricks inspire curious and creative minds to build more, do more and learn more.  By combining their love of Lego fun with educational opportunities, students will explore the world of engineering as they utilize the creative portion of their brains.
