Booking It Through History-World/US History

We will be reading our way through history in this class! Using living history books, history will become alive and personal for kids rather than a series of facts and dates they cannot relate to. History should pique their curiosity, spark their imaginations, and create a sense of adventure about what came before them and how it has shaped their world! Placing ourselves in the time period we are learning about helps us understand what it was like to live, work, eat and play during that period. By reading about other children and people “living” the history, the history will matter to them.

How did mammoth hunters stalk their prey? Were Roman gladiators “glad” to be there? When did medieval knights begin their training? What do sailors’ biscuits taste like? What would your pirate name be? Where’d the phrase “too much of a good thing” come from? What would you bring with you to the “new world”? Civil War nurses had to do WHAT? How did secret agents send messages during World War II? These are all things we’ll be finding about this year!

This class will involve the students through feedback and their opinionsso bring me your most curious children and let’s learn some history! Easy, fun homework assignments will have them placing themselves in the time period and having fun doing it. They’ll make a cave painting, create their own gladiator shield, apply for a job on a pirate crew, make time period toys, and decide the worst element of trench life in World War One. Both world and American history will covered beginning with mammoth hunting to exploring space on the Apollo 13.

2-4 homework sheets will help bring history home for both kids and parents. Please note that while homework isn’t required, it will enhance the experience for the students by enabling them to participate in class discussions. Writing can be facilitated by family members and writing and reading are not required in class.

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom, I will make the following adjustments to this class. *Tutor will submit youtube videos to view and weekly projects, experiments, or work. *Tutor and students will meet during the last 30 minutes of the scheduled class time for students to share their work with me and other students via video conferencing platform. Our plan is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin OR cancel CLASSROOM meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation changes.  Our goal is to keep your family safe and engaged during this unprecedented time.
