The World Wars and Western Civilization

This 30-week class will cover World War I, World War II and world events during the 21 years in between. We will investigate the roles of each of the countries and their leadership from the Central Powers and the Allied Powers in World War I, and we will do the same for the Axis Powers in World War II. Once we have identified everyone’s role in the conflicts, we will also explore the cultural, economic, and political results of the wars. We will have group discussions regarding topics such as the introduction of trench warfare in WWI, the Russian Revolution leading to the creation of the Soviet Union, the Holocaust, and Pearl Harbor. Some of these topics will also overlap for the students in my Creative Writing class to create more time for investigation and discovery of specific topics versus jumping all over between completely new ones. This overlap will facilitate a more classical learning approach.

Class Homework requirements: minimal/weekly reading and research so student can be prepared for discussion

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom, I will make the following adjustments to this class. Tutor and students will meet at the scheduled class time via a video chat service. Assignments can be submitted electronically, and feedback will be provided electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves.
