Rock the Speech

Studies say that public  speaking is the most common fear in the USA – in those same studies, death ranked as the second most common fear. This suggests that people would rather die than speak in public. No matter what your plans for your life, you will have to speak words. Suppose you want to become an expert in some field. Suppose you want to be a mother or father and rear a family. In either case and everything between, the ability to speak in public will be essential to your success. The ability to communicate is just as important as the technical skills we learn for what ever we desire to do. Fear is the most significant cause of anxiety and nervousness when it comes to public speaking, rather than lack of skills. Speech classes are important to overcome this fear. If you have a fear of public speaking, you will hold yourself back in life. 

This class is designed to help you use words with confidence, articulation, and energy. We will begin with exercises to build confidence and trust in the classroom. You will learn to use vocal variety, body language, eye contact, and emotional engagement to effectively communicate with those around you.  We will not only learn to deliver planned, organized speeches/presentations, but we will also learn to be good communicators, socializers, and good story tellers. Some of the speeches we will explore include impromptu, informational, and persuasive.  We will also explore engaging story telling and oral interpretation of a literary writing.  Whether you want to be an excellent orator, the life of the party, or just put away the anxiety of speaking with others, this class is for you.  Join us as we exchange our fear for excellent communication skills in an open and accepting environment.

COVID-19 Contingency Plan:

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom for the 2020-21 school year, I will make the following adjustments to this class. Tutor and students will meet at the scheduled class time for 40 minutes via a video chat service. We will discuss that week’s assignment along with other class information. Assignments will be submitted through video, and individual feedback will be provided electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves.
