Middle School Language Arts

This 30-week, one-and-a-half-hour class will cover grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing.

Grammar will be covered using Easy Grammar Plus assignments. Concepts are taught within sequential grammar units, beginning with prepositions. Using this approach, sentences are stripped to basics, enabling students to understand subject and verb and to build throughout each text. Students will be asked to purchase this book.

Vocabulary words and assignments will be taken from The Critical Thinking Company’s Vocabulary Virtuoso, Mastering Middle School Vocabulary. Students will be given 6 vocabulary words each week with activities to help them master the words for a quiz on the following week. I will provide the worksheets for this; no book will need to be purchased.

Writing will be taught using The Critical Thinking Company’s Building Writing Skills Level 2. This book teaches argumentative, narrative, and informative/explanatory writing as a 5-step process. The 5-step process is made up of Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. The step-by-step lessons use examples and easy-to-understand concept maps that teach brainstorming, planning, editing, and revising. Each lesson is followed by practice that includes a simple, timesaving scoring rubric. Students will be asked to purchase this book.

Reading will include 6 of the following books (3 per semester): (A variety of factors will determine which 6, including student input.)

  • Around the World in Eighty Days
  • The Bronze Bow
  • Number the Stars
  • The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
  • The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle
  • Hello, Universe
  • The Inquisitor’s Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog
  • Echo
  • The Tale of Despereaux
  • The Wish Giver
  • Sarah, Plain and Tall
  • The Sign of the Beaver

If the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom, we will make the following adjustments to this class. Tutor will provide assignments to be completed weekly and supplies as needed to accompany lessons. Tutor and students will meet at the scheduled class time via live video streaming to review material and answer questions. Testing will be submitted and graded/corrected electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves
