“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ~ Bilbo Baggins
This course will center around JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. We will read through the trilogy throughout the school year, coupling our reading with an exploration of grammar, vocabulary, and a sharpening of our writing skills. Students will be expected to come to class ready to talk about the assigned readings for the week – discussion will be at the heart of each class! The majority of our class time will be spent examining and considering the storyline, characterization, and plot development while synthesizing what we’ve learned through small group interaction, in-class writing assignments, and short projects.
Note: While this class is designed for middle schools students, I can provide additional elements to allow this class to serve as an English 1 credit for entering high school freshmen. Tolkien’s work is rich material well suited for 9th graders willing to delve a little deeper into the story.
