Introduction to Speech

This 30-week 1-1/2 hour beginners speech class will prepare your student for a lifetime of preparedness for any public speaking that they will encounter at some point in their lives. Communicating thoughts and ideas effectively is a recipe for success. WHY GIVE A SPEECH? Because it is important to learn how to communicate a point. Speaking in front of classmates is a great way to practice communication skills. Your student will use these skills all their lives. Achieving public speaking skills will be useful to your student in many careers as well as college.

With proper instruction even your middle school student can benefit from effective public speaking. Repetition strengthens and confirms. Every person has something interesting to say. Learning HOW to properly communicate the things that are important to you will follow your student throughout his/her life. Even the shyest, most nervous person can be a good speaker with guidance in a safe controlled atmosphere.

This interactive class is a fun, low-pressure Introduction to Public Speaking . The instruction in this class gives your students the chance to learn valuable skills that will last a lifetime. Public Speaking does not have to be difficult. It can actually be fun!

A speech is  organized much the same way as other forms of writing.  Speeches include a variety of tools that are designed to communicate information. Instruction in outlining and organizing a speech, effective presentation skills, evaluation, skits and debate will be included. Students will interact with one another on sharpening learned skills. The positive motivated feedback will strengthen and encourage each speaker. Minimum Six students required.

Class homework requirements: Each week your student will be given a topic, prepare an outline, and give speeches of varied length. Student and tutor evaluations will be offered. Vocabulary will be included weekly to enhance student participation.

COVID-19 Contingency Plan:

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom for the 2020-21 school year, I will make the following adjustments to this class. Tutor and students will meet at the scheduled class time via a video chat service. Assignments can be submitted electronically, and feedback will be provided electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves.
