This 30-week one-and-a-half-hour class is built on the Institute for Excellence in Writing, Teaching Writing: Structure and Style. Writing assignments will be from the IEW curriculum. Learning and implementing the writing skills taught in this highly effective curriculum will prepare students with writing skills that provide foundational writing performance within a concrete set of expectations. IEW offers a system that provides concrete evaluation and measurable achievement. Your student will develop competency, independence, and creativity within logical boundaries that will be built upon during the course. Students will be given structural guidelines and specific requirements. Writing concepts will be introduced one at a time and each concept will be modeled extensively. In every composition, they will be required to use the new technique along with previously learned techniques. Thus, students learn at a pace comfortable for them but require advances for each composition. Students will learn to create an outline, write from the outline, take notes, summarize narrative stories, write 3 paragraph stories, and write from pictures. This class provides a structured approach to unleashing creativity and building communication skills. IEW builds a strong foundation without overwhelming students or doing too much too fast. This course will help your child develop writing skills that will last a lifetime.

For grammar, students will use the Fix-It book to learn to hunt for and correct errors in passages that cumulatively tell a story.

Vocabulary words will come from both the IEW writing lesson and the Fix-It lesson. A vocabulary quiz consisting of approximately 6 words will be given each week.

The class will include a weekly at-home writing assignment that must be edited, typed, and printed, with peer feedback and teacher editing and review.

• Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons (Student Book)

• Fix-It Grammar: Level 2 – Town Mouse and Country Mouse

• Internet access, computer, and printer (all essays must be typed and printed to turn in to class)

• Access to Schoology – this is where assignments will be posted
