US History

The study of history is a window into the past that provides an understanding of the present and the trajectory of our future. Plainly, it teaches us where we came from and where we are likely to be going. Also, history inspires us as we learn about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, in difficult circumstances, against incredible odds. As we study American history, we will explore the discovery and birth of a nation and all of the beauty and devastation within its 400 years.

Topics we will cover:

  • Early exploration and discoveries of the Americas
  • Native American History & Colonization
  • Independence, an American Revolution, & Constitution
  • Westward Expansion
  • Slavery in America
  • Civil War & Reconstruction
  • Industrial Age & Immigration
  • WWI, Women’s Suffrage, & Great Depression
  • WWII & The New Deal
  • Korean War
  • Civil Rights Movement
  • Vietnam War Era
  • Booms and Busts of Modern History
  • The 21st Century Information Age

In this 30 week class for students in grades 9-12, we will explore American history from multiple perspectives in order to ensure a comprehensive knowledge of our country’s past. Students will receive a look at the military events, socio-political movements, economic cycles, and legal landmarks that mark our nation’s development.  In this multi-media approach, students will have the opportunity to watch videos, read literature excerpts about inspiring historical figures, develop a foundational timeline, and even engage in discussion and debate! It is my hope to avoid a boring lecture series, but instead, engage students in a way that they see how history is relevant to them today! Note: As we discuss difficult parts of history and attempt to relate historical events to modern dilemmas, the classroom will remain a safe space for learning and exploring for all students.
