DJ Academy – Start Your Own Business

Learn how to turn playing music into a rewarding career from a full-time mobile disc jockey.  The DJ Academy is a fun, 30-week, hands-on class that teaches simple music theory, tempo, rhythm, mixing, as well as how to create beats, select DJ gear and crowd-read an audience.  Announcing, microphone skills and recording basics will also be covered as well as the business side of the entertainment industry including how to find gigs, marketing, sales, and presentation.  Students will find this class a fast-track to learning the do’s and don’ts of performance entertainment.  Prior DJ experience is not necessary.

Materials needed:

  • DJ Controller (no turntables) that supports Serato DJ Lite. (List of approved controllers available – Prices start at $100, Good investments start at $250)
  • Microphone (List available – prices start at $30)
  • Headphones ($30 – List available)
  • Reliable mid-spec laptop (minimum Intel i3 chipset or Ryzen AMD chipset, 4GB RAM or higher, 5gb storage or higher, Win 10 or higher or Mac 10.15 or higher). Available USB 2.0 Port. No tablets or phones.
  • USB Flash Drive [to bring music to and from class] 8gb or higher

Class Homework: given out on a weekly basis to review lessons learned in class.  Solo and group projects will also be assigned.

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom,  I will make the following adjustments to this class. Teacher and students will meet at the scheduled class time via a video chat service. Assignments can be submitted electronically, and feedback will be provided electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves
