Do daily math lessons cause unwanted stress in your family’s homeschooling? Is math causing anxiety for your child? Not every child learns math the same way. Determining the correct methods and language to use with your child to make math make sense can be difficult. If your child has been diagnosed with dyscalculia or if you are suspicious he/she has it or another math learning disability, this tutoring may be just what you need. Dyscalculia is found in the population at similar rates to dyslexia, yet many have never heard of it. A multi-sensory approach to math will facilitate your child’s understanding of math by beginning with concrete ideas and moving into abstract thinking.
Each week your child will have one standing appointment on Tuesdays for a 45-minute in person tutoring session with Jan Schulte, a veteran homeschooling mom and certified Dyscalculia Tutor. Students with dyscalculia have the best results when they receive tutoring twice a week. To accomplish this, appointments can be made on either Wednesdays or Thursdays for additional in person 45-minute sessions as desired for an additional fee. Weekly sessions will be tailored to your child’s needs. Areas addressed will include number sense, subitizing, operations, word problems, fact fluency, and place value while encouraging various strategies using manipulatives. Next, your student will move on to more advanced math concepts when appropriate using manipulatives to teach concretely first before advancing to more commonly used algorithms. You will receive regular feedback on your child’s progress, recommended topics to review, and will have access to the online platform, IXL, for practice of the concepts at home. All needed supplies will be provided by the tutor.
It is important to understand that participation in this tutoring is not a substitute for a full math curriculum. This tutoring is in support of the daily math lessons that are required by the student’s umbrella school policy.
Homework Requirement: Daily math lessons in accordance with parent selected curriculum, and weekly diagnostics on IXL are required. Additional practice beyond weekly diagnostics is highly encouraged. Suggestions for skills to practice on IXL will be provided by the tutor.
