IEW Creative Writing A

This 30 week 1-1/2 hour class is built on the Institute for Excellence in Writing, Teaching Writing: Structure and Style. The majority of assignments will be from the IEW curriculum. However, these will also be alternated with assignments with more flexibility and freedom, including poetry, journalism writing, speech writing, and brainstorming.Learning and implementing the writing skills taught in this highly effective curriculum will prepare elementary age students with writing skills that provide foundational writing performance within a concrete set of expectations. IEW offers a system that provides concrete evaluation and measurable achievement. Your student will develop competency, independence, and creativity within logical boundaries that will be built upon during the course.Students will be given structural guidelines and specific requirements. Writing concepts will be introduced one at a time. Each concept will be modeled extensively. In every composition they will be required to use each new technique. Thus, students learn at a pace comfortable for them but requiring advances for each composition. Students will learn to create an outline, write from the outline, take notes, summarize narrative stories, write 3 paragraph stories, write from pictures, and compose creative essays from the brain. This class provides a structured approach to unleashing creativity and building communication skills. IEW builds a strong foundation without overwhelming students or doing too much too fast. This course will help your child develop writing skills that will last a lifetime.Students will also learn to hunt for and correct errors in passages that cumulatively tell a story.

The class includes weekly writing lab with peer feedback and teacher editing and review.

COVID-19 Contingency Plan:

In the event that the COVID-19 pandemic affects our ability to meet in person in a classroom for the 2021-22 school year, I will make the following adjustments to this class. Tutor and students will meet at the scheduled class time via a video chat service. Assignments can be submitted electronically, and feedback will be provided electronically. Our goal is to meet in person as soon as it is feasible. We may begin classroom meetings at any point during the school year as the COVID-19 situation resolves.
