Latin – Levels 1, 2, and 3

This multi-level Latin course is designed to teach your student to master the Latin grammar through an easy to use, step-by-step process that brings out the logical and systematic nature of this language. In studying Latin, your student will gain an academic vocabulary, a mastery of English grammar, and will develop the critical thinking skills that come from the study of a complex, inflected grammar.

Latin Level 1’s grammar-first approach focuses on grammar forms and vocabulary because these are the skills suitable for the grammar stage student. All beginners—regardless of age—are in the grammar stage of learning. Syntax (how to use the grammar) and translation are logic and rhetoric stage skills, respectively, and quickly overwhelm the student unless introduced at a slow, gentle pace and taught for mastery. This course uses Memoria Press’s First Form Latin which is the ideal text for all beginners, regardless of age.  After finishing First Form, the student will have mastered:

  • The six indicative active tenses of the first two verb conjugations
  • Five noun declensions
  • First and second declension adjectives
  • 185 vocabulary words

Latin Level 2 continues the journey of Latin grammar. Building on what the student learned the previous year, Second Form reviews all material in First Form, completes the verb paradigms for all four conjugations in the indicative active and passive, and much more! Once they have finished Second Form, students will have crossed the halfway mark on their Latin journey! After finishing Second Form, the student will have mastered:

  • Six indicative active and three indicative passive tenses of all four verb conjugations
  • Five noun declensions, including -er/-ir nouns and i-stem nouns
  • Adjectives in three declensions
  • Personal pronouns
  • Prepositions
  • 365 vocabulary words (185 in First Form, and another 180 new words in Second Form)

Latin Level 3 continues the journey of Latin grammar by reviewing all material in First and Second Form, completing the verb paradigms for all four conjugations in the indicative active and passive, and much more.  After finishing Third Form Latin, the student will have mastered:

  • Perfect system passive indicative of all four conjugations
  • Active and passive subjunctive (all tenses) of all four conjugations
  • Imperative mood and vocative case
  • 4th declension neuter nouns
  • 3rd declension adjectives of one & three terminations, and nine irregular adjectives
  • Regular and irregular comparison of adjectives and adverbs
  • Pronouns: 3rd person personal, demonstrative, intensive, and reflexive
  • Syntax: apposition, adjectives used as nouns, purpose clauses, exhortations, deliberative questions, and objective & partitive genitive
